Have you torn your meniscus?
This is your cushion that protects your joint space, absorbs stress and transfers weight through your knee. It is made of thick tough tissue that is able to withstand pressure to stabilise the knee.
The most common cause of meniscus tears are a rapid twisting of the knee, where your foot was planted in the ground and your body went the other way. Common symptoms include:
- Clicking
- Locking
- Swelling
- Unable to straighten/bend the knee
This will be limiting to your function and stop you from using stairs, running and when severe – walking.
Treatment should commence immediately after injury and will include soft tissue massage, stationary bike compression and cryotherapy. An MRI may be necessary and your therapist may request it at your initial appointment although not always necessary.
